Deaf-Blind News A New Leader Corinne Klein Jensema, Ph.D. The Federal Government distributes the funding which emanates from the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (8910 ), Title VI-C through the Deaf-Blind Centers and Services Section of the Office of Special Education. This responsibility for proposal review and the awarding of contracts was handled by Mr. Robert Dantona from the inception of the office in 1967 until November of this past year. At that time, Mr. Dantona joined the staff of the Perkins School for the Blind in Watertown , Massachusetts and was replaced by Ms. Jane Case Williams. Ms. Williams brings to the position extensive experience in government planning and project review. She began her career as a speech and hearing therapist in South Dakota but soon migrated to Washington, D.C. where she obtained her first federal job in the Office of Economic Opportunity. There she helped direct speech and hearing services largely for Head Start Programs. She next accepted the position of Deputy Secretary of Planning within the Office of Planning after which she became Section Chief of Elementary, Secondary, and Postsecondary Programs at BEH. There she worked largely on grant review, allocation of discretionary monies for model programs, and indepth analysis of the needs of the severely profoundly handicapped population. Ms. Williams received a B.A. in Speech and Audiology from George Washington University and an M. A. in Applied Linguistics from American University. Ms. Williams describes her job primarily as a contracting officer. This coming year she intends to devote her attention to an in-depth analysis of the potential and needs of the deafblind population and a reprioritization of issues to which her office will be directed. She sees the future of the 1964 rubella population and the coordination of services with other branches, such as Vocational Rehabilitation, as primary concerns. The field of deaf-blind education and services is fortunate to have Ms. Jane Case Williams join its ranks. Her experience and ideas will bring new dimensions to this leadership position.
