The handicap of deafness is not the inability to hear but rather the difficulty of dealing with a world where most information is transmitted by sound. For this reason, Pima Community College has developed the American Sign Language (ASL)/English Studies Project in Tucson, Arizona. We have created a bilingual/ bicultural approach to language which prepares deaf students to enter and succeed in their first community college English course. The Project enables deaf students to understand and to see how ASL and English operate.
