This essay explores the extent to which Hemingway might have modeled his life and art, and the slippages between the two, on those of Byron. Hemingway’s intensive reading of literary biography, marketing strategies employed to capitalize on images of the author as “Byronic hero,” and Hemingway’s engagement with Byron within Modernism are all considered. Finally, the essay reiterates how Hemingway’s calculated engagement with Byron and the Byronic remains a viable and lucrative marketing strategy today.
