Notice to Contributors

The editor invites submission of article-length manuscripts (not exceeding 10,000 words/35 pages double-spaced including notes). The journal seeks original scholarly contributions that challenge old paradigms, propose new ideas and theses, set forth innovative research and methodologies, or engage significant historiographic or interpretive issues regarding China's long twentieth century as seen through mainland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or diasporic activities. Comparative empirical and/or theoretical studies that are rooted in Chinese experience but touch on non-China-related subjects are welcome. In addition, proposals for reviews of significant non-English Western-, Chinese-, Japanese-, or Korean-language works relating to twentieth-century China, translations of influential articles, or symposium-style special issues are welcomed. The journal also seeks to provide a forum for scholarly conference and project announcements and similar activities that promote the academic pursuits of the journal's readers around the world.

When submitting an article for consideration, prepare the manuscript itself with the title only (and no author's name) at the top of the first page. Create a separate unpaginated title page with the author's name. Do not print the author's name on any other pages. All Chinese and Japanese characters must be Unicode compliant and should appear in the text itself (followed by pinyin and/or Hepburn romanization) rather than in a glossary. Chinese characters should be period- and locale-specific (traditional for pre-1949 China, for Hong Kong, and for Taiwan/ROC history and simplified for PRC-related topics). Please do not use Chinese characters in footnotes, rather use pinyin or Hepburn romanization with English translations in parentheses. Use only footnotes (not MLA-style in-text citations or endnotes). All manuscripts should conform to citation styles found in the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th edition. All citations and text must be complete; see the current issue or our website for examples. All pages, including the first, must be numbered. Full publication data are required in the first citation of a work; thereafter, short titles should be used. Frequently cited sources may be given acronymic abbreviations; please supply a list. Use "smart" quotation marks only. Because footnotes should conform to the Chicago Manual of Style, a bibliography is unnecessary.

Please e-mail an electronic copy of your manuscript, an abstract of no more than 150 words summarizing the argument and significance of your article, and your contact information (including your preferred title, the name of your department and institution, phone number, and street address) to tcc-sju@sju.edu.

Twentieth-Century China is partnered with the Historical Society for Twentieth-Century China (HSTCC), which is affiliated with the Association for Asian Studies and the American Historical Association. Membership in HSTCC includes subscription to the journal, and this is the recommend means for individuals to subscribe to Twentieth-Century China.
