  • Contribution in Honor of Frederica de Laguna
  • Lora Johnson

On behalf of the Chugach Museum and Institute of History and Art, whose charter members include Chugachmiut and Chugach Alaska Corporation, I am honored to contribute a few words in memory of Frederica de Laguna. Dr. de Laguna's extensive research pertaining to the archaeology and ethnology of the Native peoples of the Gulf of Alaska has made a significant and lasting contribution to the history and the future of Alaska and Alaska Natives. For the Chugach region, her scholarly publications on the Native prehistory of Kachemak Bay, Prince William Sound, the Copper River, and Mount St. Elias add depth and substance to our ongoing efforts to preserve the past, make sense of the present, and build on our traditions for the future.

I believe that Dr. de Laguna would be pleased to know that the Native peoples of the Chugach region now operate a regional archaeological repository and local display facilities in each of the villages, and that these facilities exhibit prehistoric artifacts similar to those she encountered during her studies. Dr. de Laguna's work helped to instill in Native people an increased awareness of the past and made a significant contribution toward preserving this past for future generations. For this we sincerely thank her and will miss her. [End Page 20]
