Abstract

We found mixed support for a four-credit first-year seminar's positive impact on student engagement and academic performance but none for retention or intellectual growth. Our findings support the importance of shifting focus away from retention, increasing clarity about types of seminars, and using multiple measures and alternative indicators of impact.
