Abstract

This article provides an introduction to this issue of The Journal of Higher Education. Reasons for the centrality of norms in the work of colleges and universities are advanced. The importance of normative structures to the critical positions of the presidency, the academic deanship, admissions officers, institutional advancement officers as well as for teaching and research is emphasized.
