Book Awards

The Organization of American Historians seeks nominations for the 2011 Avery O. Craven Award. Awarded annually since 1985, the Avery O. Craven Awards recognizes the most original book on the coming of the Civil War, the Civil War years, or Reconstruction. Books of pure military history will not receive consideration, as this stipulation recognizes the Quaker beliefs of Craven, who served as President of the Organization of American Historians from 1963 to 1964. The Civil War Institute at Gettysburg College seeks nominations for the 2010 Lincoln Prize. Established in 1990, the Lincoln Prize at Gettysburg College is annually awarded by the Lincoln and Soldiers Institute for the finest scholarly work in English on Abraham Lincoln, the American Civil War soldier, or a subject relating to their era. The $50,000 prize was cofounded and endowed by businessmen and philanthropists Richard Gilder and Lewis Lehrman. The deadline for nominations is November 1, 2010. The Museum of the Confederacy seeks nominations for its 2010 Founders Award. This award recognizes excellence in the editing of primary source materials published in 2009 and 2010. Conferences

The Society for Historians of the Early American Republic will convene its 32nd Annual Meeting at the Rochester Institute of Technology on July 22, 2010. The Southern Historical Association will convene its 76th Annual Meeting on November 4, 2010, at the Westin Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina. The meeting will continue to reflect the objectives of the Southern Historical Association, which focus upon the promotion of both interest and research in southern history.
