By using Friedrich Nietzsche's philosophy on fate and free will and by closely examining the Harry Potter texts, this paper considers the opportunities Rowling allows her characters for free will as they are balanced against the strong hand of fate, demonstrating how both forces work to encourage strong-willed characters.
