  • An Updated Bibliography of Charles Chesnutt's Syndicated Newspaper Publications
  • John M. Freiermuth

Since the publication of Charles Johanningsmeier's "What We Can Learn from a Better Bibliographical Record of Charles W. Chesnutt's Periodical Fiction" in 1999, I have devoted hundreds of hours to carrying out its charge to fill in the many gaps in the record of Chesnutt works published in newspapers and magazines. Building on previous bibliographical work on Chesnutt, the goal of my research has been not only "to provide a firmer foundation for future Chesnutt studies, but also to understand more fully Chesnutt's career as an author and better assess how readers of his day might have interacted with his work."1 Perhaps the largest lacuna in Chesnutt bibliography is the lack of information about the republication of Chesnutt's fiction in newspapers. While William L. Andrews and Sylvia Lyons Render have reported many of Chesnutt's periodical publications, they also neglected some of the works that Chesnutt syndicated through S. S. McClure's Associated Literary Press fiction syndicate from 1885 to 1888. Furthermore, even when they did list a work Chesnutt syndicated in this manner, they typically cited only one place of publication. I have thus far been able to locate many other printings of Chesnutt's syndicated fictions and expect to find even more in the future.
