Flamingo
Der Flamingo ist der Flamingo, nichts Anderes, nichts Schöneres, nichts Besseres und nichts Schlechteres. Er hat, glaube ich, überhaupt keinen näheren Verwandten. Allenfalls läßt er sich, wenn es sein muß, mit dem Ibis vergleichen, der auch nichts Besonderes ist. Man wird mir vergeben, wenn ich bemerke, daß der Flamingo eine schmackhafte Speise ist für die in der Fremde herumwankenden hungrigen Reisenden. Ich kann gut begreifen, daß meine Kollegen schon mit den Lippen schmatzen, wenn vom Flamingo die Rede ist. Zum Schluß noch einige abschließende Worte über die Hauptsache. [End Page 86]

El flamenco
El flamenco es el flamenco, y nada más; nada más hermoso, nada mejor ni nada peor. No tiene, creo, ningún pariente cercano en absoluto. En todo caso, si no hay otro remedio, cabe compararlo con el ibis, que tampoco es nada especial. Me perdonarán el comentario de que el flamenco es un plato muy sabroso para el viajero que deambula hambriento por tierras desconocidas. Comprenderé perfectamente que, al oír hablar del flamenco, mis colegas ya estén relamiéndose. Para finalizar, unas cuantas palabras de cierre sobre el asunto principal.
Ror Wolf nació en Saalfeld, Alemania, en 1932 y en la actualidad vive en Mainz. Wolf quizá sea uno de los escritores más interesantes de Alemania hoy en día. Fue bien recibido por la crítica desde su debut con Fortsetzung des Berichts, en 1964, y desde entonces ha recibido importantes premios literarios; recientemente el Kassel Literary Prize, por humor grotesco, otorgado por la Fundación Brückner-Külner, y el premio Friedrich Hölderin en reconocimiento a sus contribuciones a la lengua alemana y a la literatura. Su estilo tiene las características de un collage, uniendo piezas dispares; técnica que también usa para crear collage artístico. Wolf es conocido también por su pseudónimo, Raoul Tranchirer, que utilizó para un proyecto enciclopédico, que sirve de parodia a las enciclopedias tradicionales del siglo diecinueve.

The flamingo is a flamingo, nothing else, nothing more beautiful, better or worse. It has, as far as I know, no closer relations at all. At best it can if necessary be compared to the ibis, which is also nothing special. I will be forgiven for stating that the flamingo is a tasty dish for hungry travellers tottering about in foreign parts. Ror Wolf was born in Saalfeld, Germany, in 1932 and now lives in Mainz. He is probably one of the most interesting writers in Germany. He has been well received by critics since his debut with Fortsetzung des Berichts, in 1964. Ever since he has been awarded important literary prizes; most recently the Kassel Literary Prize for grotesque humor, given by the Brückner-Kühner Foundation and the Friedrich Hölderlin Award in recognition of his contribution to German language and literature. His writing style resembles that of a collage, joining disparate pieces together, a technique he also uses for creating picture collages. He has used the pseudonym Raoul Tranchirer for his encyclopedic project, which parodies the traditional encyclopedias of the nineteenth century.
Isabel García Adánez es licenciada en Filología alemana y Filología hispánica y Doctora en Filología Alemana. Es profesora de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid y traductora literaria de clásicos alemanes como Heinrich Heine, Joseph Roth, Arthur Schnitzler, Klaus Mann y Thomas Mann (su traducción de La montaña mágica recibió el Premio Quijote a la mejor traducción de 2006). Sus principales campos de investigación son la literatura en lengua alemana del siglo XIX y XX, la literatura comparada, la literatura de terror y ciencia ficción y las relaciones entre los distintos lenguajes artísticos, especialmente entre literatura y música y entre literatura y cine.
Isabel García Adánez has MA Degrees in German and Hispanic Philology, and a PhD in German Philology. She teaches at the Universidad Complutense, in Madrid, Spain, and she is also a literary translator of German Classics by writers such as Heinrich Heine, Joseph Roth, Arthur Schnitzler, Klaus Mann and Thomas Mann (her translation of The Magic Mountain received the Quijote Award for the best translation in 2006). Her research focuses particularly in German literature of the XIXth and XXth Centuries, comparative literature, horror and science fiction, and the relationship between the different artistic genres, especially music, literature and film.
Eva Bourke ha editado cinco colecciones de poemas; la más reciente lleva por título The Latitude of Naples (Dedalus, 2005). Su nueva colección de poemas saldrá de imprenta en el 2010. Eva también ha publicado varios libros de poesía irlandesa y alemana en traducción; en estos momentos se halla realizando, junto con Borbala Farago, una antología de poetas que emigraron a Irlanda durante los siglos XX y XXI; la serie Poetry Europe, de la casa editorial Dedalus, editará esta colección. Sus poemas han sido traducidos a varias lenguas y ella ha recibido numerosos premios y becas del Arts Council. Eva es también miembro de Aosdána, la Academia Irlandesa de las Artes.
Eva Bourke has published five collections of poetry, most recently The Latitude of Naples (Dedalus, 2005). Her New and Selected Poems are due out next year. She has published several books of translations of Irish and German poets and is presently co-editing together with Borbala Farago an anthology of immigrant poets to Ireland, entitled Landing Places due out early 2010 by the Dedalus Press. She is just completing the translations for an anthology of German poetry of the XXth and XXIst century for the Poetry Europe Series of the Dedalus Press. Eva Bourke has read at festivals all over Europe, the US and Central America. Her work has been translated into many languages and she has received numerous awards and scholarships from the Arts Council. Eva is also a member of Aosdána, Ireland's Academy of the Arts.
