An Unknown 18th-century Edition of a Dutch Translation of the Faustbuch

JOHN ROGER PAAS An Unknown 18th-century Edition of a Dutch Translation of the Faustbuch ON PAGES 136 TO 142 of Hans Henning's Faust-Bibliographie, Part 1 (Berlin and Weimar: Aufbau-Verlag, 1966), one finds a number of editions of Dutch translations of the Faustbuch of 1587 from the late 16th century to the late 18th century. The library in Skokloster Castle—the residence built by the Swedish marshal Karl Gustav Wrangel after his service in Germany at the end of the Thirty Years' War—houses a Dutch edition unknown to Henning. This specific edition, dated 1706, is similar to other editions listed in Henning, but it is especially interesting, for it contains more illustrations than any other Dutch, Danish, English, or French translation of the Faustbuch. This specific Dutch edition should appear in Henning's bibliography as number 1130a: De HISTORIE Van Doctor JOANNES FAUSTUS. Die een uytneemendengrooten Toveraer (!) en zwerte Konstenaer was. Van syn Duyvelsche Verschryvinge/van syn Onchristelyck Leven/wonderlycke Avonturen/en van syn schrickelyck en grouwelyck Eynde en Afscheyt.
