Abstract

Sacramental sanctification occurs not through conventional causality, but in the nature of sacraments as signs. Taking up the Greek and Latin terms for these rites, this paper argues that sacraments are at once a promise and a mystery: always promising a mysterious more, the sacrament draws significance into the sacred.
