That Goethe indeed intended to pubUsh the aphorisms and the two poems subsequently omitted from the Wanderjabre right up to 1949 should not surprise us, as he sought eagerly to have everything he had ever written secured m print from the French invasion of 1806 onward . WhUe I tend to beUeve too his assertion of an internal unity running throughout the original and the added material, I do so chiefly because I beUeve that his notion of such a unity derived above aU from himself and his own thought processes. What he could retrieve and understand made total sense as far as he was concerned. And of course, as the creator/compUer of everythUig in the whole work, it aU held together for him Ui a particular way. As a critic I therefore set little store by his claim for internal unity, even though I do accept it as sincere. Such unity seems quite simply irretrievable without Goethe to help out. And "helping out" was something he notoriously shunned throughout his long Ufe. So often deUberately obUque, even obfuscatory , in relation to requests for further insight into works he had written , he always placed the burden of understanding and the search for meaning squarely on the shoulders of his readers—perhaps nowhere more clearly than in that "Aggregat," "das neue Geschlinge" (both terms used by Goethe) which was WUhelm Meisters Wanderjahre. WhUe this certainly has interesting impUcations for his complex role in the author-reader relationship here, it seems unwise to characterize such complexity merely as evidence of Goethe's death or disappearance as author. Drawing on Adolf Muschg (1982), Bahr rightly centers the saUent problems of this text on the replacement of a plot by a "pluraUty of discourses and theü discontinuity, UistabUity, and transience" (99). Whether he is equaUy right in asserting that this work is "one of Goethe's greatest accomphshments" (xv) or m defining that great accomplishment as "a novel [?] m which the fictive is no longer strictly Umited by the traditional figure of the author but is put at the disposal of the reader" (102) is quite another matter. In aU events, Bahr's book undoubtedly acts as a welcome stimulus and resource tool for further reading and reflection on the complexities of the genesis, reception, and substance of Wilhelm Meisters Wanderjahre. Weünar: Verlag Hermann Böhlaus Nachfolger, 1998. 500pp. Bei dem hier anzuzeigenden neuen Buch von Heinz Hamm handelt es sich um den GlücksfaU einer wissenschaftiichen Publikation, die eine wichtige, Ui ihrer Bedeutung kaum zu überschätzende QueUe zum späten Goethe präsentiert. Diese QueUe ist hier gründlich und umfas- Goethe Yearbook 305 send erschlossen und auf vorbUdUch benutzerfreundüche Weise dargeboten , nämüch mit detailUerten Verzeichnissen, mit Regesten der von Goethe gelesenen Artikel (wobei die entscheidenden Passagen deutsch und französisch zitiert werden), mit einem vielfach unterteüten Index sowie einer kenntnisreichen, sachUchen Einleitung. Man wußte immer schon, daß die 1824 gegründete "phUosophische und Uterarische" Zeitschrift Le Globe zu Goethes Lieblingslektüren im Alter zählte. Etf Beiträge in Kunst und Altertum enthalten Auszüge aus dem Globe; insgesamt war bisher Goethes Lektüre von 25 Artikeln nachgewiesen. Niemand hatte sich jedoch bis dato die Mühe gemacht, die in Goethes Haus am Frauenplan lagernden Bestände des alten Globe näher anzuschauen und auf Lesespuren zu untersuchen. Heinz Hamm hat sich dankenswerterweise dieser Mühe unterzogen und ist dabei unerwartet fündig geworden. Es zeigte sich, daß sich Goethe weit eüiläßücher mit den Un Globe verhandelten Gegenständen auseinandersetzte als man bisher ahnte. Durch aufwendige "phüologische Kleinarbeit" (14), d.h. den Vergleich der ausdrückUchen und stummen MargüiaUen Ui den Exemplaren des Globe mit Goethes Exzerpten in seüiem bisher erst partieU ausgewerteten "Notizenbuch" und mit den Zitaten, Anspielungen und sonstigen Hinweisen in den Schriften und persönUchen Zeugnissen ist es Ulm gelungen, die Lektüre von...
