EHRHARD BAHR and WALTER K. STEWART North American Goethe Dissertations: 1989-99 Supplement THE FOLLOWING BIBLIOGRAPHY UPDATES the previous Supplement of North American Goethe Dissertations 1981-88 that appeared in Goethe Yearbook 5 (1990): 293-303. Together with the previous two installments, the present study represents the most complete compendium of dissertations to date that treat Goethe, his works, and his influence. We note here, too, that increasingly many studies no longer focus on Goethe exclusively but rather include him as an Unportant part of their work. As a result, we have included dissertations with titles that at first glance do not appear to bear on Goethe; yet theü abstracts clearly show that they deal with hün Ui a substantive way. For our purposes, if Goethe serves as a formative influence on the dissertation subject matter, or if bis thought and works are related and discussed substantively, we have Usted the dissertation. Some dissertations , for example, devote a chapter to him, his thinking, or his works. We beUeve that adding such dissertations to the bibUography shows the breadth and depth of Goethe's influence Ui modern scholarship . We reaUze that addenda and corrigenda may be requüed for completeness and therefore welcome the assistance of our readers.
