Contributors Brenda Austin-Smith is Assistant Professor in the Department of English, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. She writes on narrative in fiction and film, and is working on a study of women's inter-generational responses to Hollywood melodrama. Melanie Eckford-Prossor teaches theory at Mississippi State University. Her most recent publications include articles about the Euro and William Gass's The Tunnel. Currently, she is working on a book about the colonizing of childhood. Robbie B. H. Goh teaches nineteenth-century literature, cultural studies and critical theory in the Department of English Language and Literature of the National University of Singapore. Recent publications include the forthcoming Postcolonial Cultures and Literatures: Modernity and the (Un) Commonwealth (co-edited with Andrew Benjamin), and articles in Social Semiotics, Ariel, and the Journal of Popular Culture. Chris Ann Matteo completed her doctorate in Comparative Literature at Princeton University in January 2000. Her special interests are in eighteenth - and nineteenth-century British literature, ancient Greek and Latin literature, and in particular, the history of the novel and narrative theory. Her dissertation, Muses & Mentors: The Chronotope of Classical Antiquity in the British Epic Novel, explores a new approach to classical allusion in the novels of Henry Fielding, Walter Scott, and George Eliot. She is presently Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Georgia College and State University in Milledgeville, Georgia. 282 JNT Alison E. Wheatley is an Assistant Professor of English at Kansas State University. She earned her B.A. at Barnard College and her Ph.D. at the University of Virginia, writing her dissertation on dramatic aspects of Conrad's fiction. Her publications include "Ά world of their own': Subversion of Gender Expectations in Conrad's Plays," forthcoming, Papers on Language and Literature. She also is editing a collection of Conrad's dramatic works for the Cambridge Edition of Joseph Conrad. ...
