69 the Hindu rituals, the unconscious is liberated and promises fulfillment for the characters, though some are unequal to the intensity of the revelations which come to them (as are Mrs. Moore and Adela Quested in the Caves). The Temple intimates the possibilities of fulfillment to be found in the super-consciousness and the affirmation of the total universe as a fusion in the One of spirit and matter. The affirmation, dramatized in "Temple," is antithetical to the nihilism embodied in the "Caves" echo. Hinduism thus becomes a mirror image of India, "blending diversity, containing opposites and spanning a continuum from mud to mystery." In Parry's view the novel suggests means and possibilities for spiritual fruition rather than the achievement of it or the formulation of certainties. Still, the possibilities for spiritual illumination are a11-important; they presage a union with the One and a whole range of spiritual experiences that modern civilizatio tends to subvert and deny. Thus in Passage Förster subordinates his rationalism, toward which he is sympathetic in Fielding's humanism, to a contemplation of the sublime for the illumination it may bring. Such are some highlights from Parry's professional and imaginative interpretation of A Passage to India. This late in the day when the bulk of commentary on Passage is overpowering, it is a sign of the greatness of the novel that skilled critics and discerning scholars like Meyers and Parry can provide us with new insights into it and fresh bases for a complete understanding of it. Parry's book is, in particular, a milestone in Forster scholarship. By juxtaposing Forster with other writers of AngloIndian fiction and by placing him against the Anglo-Indian milieu of the late nineteenth century, she defines more precisely the exact contours of Förster's novel, the originality and toughness that went into it, and the attitudes and values which he condemned in it as well as those which he embraced in it.
