Midwest Victorian Studies Association: The topic of the annual meeting to be held at the Newberry Library, Chicago, 1-2 May I98I will be "Law, Rule, and Resistance in Victorian England." Gissing Symposium: A three-day symposium on George Gissing will take place in his native town, Wakefield, in Yorkshire, from Sept 4 to 6, I98I. This event, sponsored by the Gissing Trust, will include a tour of Gissing sites in Wakefield and its vicinity led by Clifford Brook, and lectures by Pierre Coustillas, Peter Keating, Jacob Korg, Philip Collins, John Halperin, and Gillian Tindall. It has been scheduled to coincide with the opening of a Gissing Centre in the novelist's birthplace which will house displays and a library related to Gissing and other Wakefield literary figures.
