MAMORU OSAWA 18 Jan 1904 - 13 April I98O Professor Osawa's legacy not only to students of Thomas Hardy but to all of us interested in promoting a more active dialogue between the oriental and the western community of scholars is considerable. Much of what he accomplished was through the force of his personality , his kindness to western scholars visiting Japan, and his cultural ambassadorship whenever he travelled to western countries to participate in symposia. A graduate of the Tokyo Imperial University, he held many influential positions in institutions of higher education in Japan: Professor of English at Yonezawa Higher School of Technology, the Fourth Higher School of Kanazawa, Kanazawa University, and President of Kanazawa Municipal University of Arts and Crafts. He founded the Thomas Hardy Society of Japan in 1957 and served as its president until his death, and he was vice president of the Hardy Society of Great Britain. He was much decorated by the government of his own country. Among his publications are the following: Mihon Bunka to Eibungaku (Japanese Culture and English Literature) (1937); Hardy Bungaku no Kenkyu (A Study of Hardy (19^9¡ enlg, 1966); Eibei Kiko (Journey to England and America) (I969); and many translations into Japanese of works by Hardy, Conrad, Thomas Wolfe, Maugham, and others.
