54 THE EDITOR'S FENCE 1. ELT Special Session on English Fiction (1880-1920) - Critical Approaches (MLA, Chicago, Dec 1977)< The proposed twenty-first ELT Special Session, with H. E. Gerber (Arizona State University) in the chair, will focus on problems raised by various recent critical approaches to such authors as Arnold Bennett, John Galsworthy, George Gissing, Thomas Hardy, George Moore, H. G. Wells, Oscar Wilde - and/or others. It is our intention to explore what is right and what is wrong in recent attempts to assess these writers, especially to consider why it is that many of these writers are still being held in relatively low esteem. We urge participants to consider whether or not some of the critical approaches are inherently unjust to these writers, whether it is the critics or their subjects who fall short in some way. We urge participants to propose critical alternatives that might lead to a fuller and perhaps more favorable revaluation of ELT authors than generally appears to have been the case. Prospective panelists are urged to submit concise position statements rather than full-fledged papers for publication in ELT, XXt 4 (1977) as stimuli to discussion. Resultant full-length papers by the panelists and other participants will be considered for publication in ELT during 1978 and 1979· Position statements may be up to five pages long (single-spaced) and they may be in the form of brief enumerated propositions or provocations to discussion . Material to be considered for publication and for possible use at the meeting must be submitted before 1 June 1977 so that panelists' names can appear in the MLA program. 2. Subscriptions Due: To enable us to keep subscription rates at their present level, we urge subscribers to renew their subscriptions for 1977 as soon as possible. We are grateful to the very large number of subscribers who this year prepaid their subscriptions early. We are doing our part to keep costs down by mailing the first two numbers together in March of each year and the final two numbers of each volume in October. ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. NEH Seminars and Fellowships: NEH has announced funding for 1977 Summer Seminars for College Teachers and 1977-78 Fellowships in Residence for College Teachers. The application deadline (8 Nov 1976) for the 1977-78 Fellowships in Residence has passed but the application deadline for Summer Seminars is 15 March 1977.
