ANNOUNCEMENTS 1. Conference: The Joynes Center for Continuing Education and the Departments of English and History, Winthrop College, will sponsor Scotch-Irish Heritage Festival, II at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, S.C, 17-19 November 1983. 2. Call for Papers: Patriarchs, Prophets and Demons: Major Victorians and Major Victorian Issues Revisited will be the topic of the 1984 meeting of the Midwest Victorian Studies Association in Ann Arbor, MI, 12-14 April 1984. They welcome proposals treating persons or issues traditionally considered "major" or lesser figures or issues that are candidates for upward assessment. Eight-to-ten-page papers or two-page abstracts should be sent by 15 November 1983 to Frederick Kirchhoff , English Dept., Indiana Univ.-Purdue Univ. at Fort Wayne, Fort Wayne, IN 46805. 3. Conference: The Northeast Victorian Studies Association will hold its 1984 conference on 13-15 April at Hofstra Univ., Hempstead, New York. The conference theme will be The Victorian Frame of Mind: 1830-1870 in memory of Professor Walter E. Houghton of Wellesley. Symposium: The year 1984 marks the bicentennial of the birth of Leigh Hunt (1784-1859). Because the University of Iowa's collection of books and manuscripts by Hunt is outstanding, the event will be celebrated in Iowa City with a symposium on the life and times of Leigh Hunt. The meeting will take place on 13 April 1984 and will include Richard D. Altick, Charles E. Robinson, David H. Stam, Rosemary T. Van Arsdel, and Carl Woodring. WHIM Conference: The Western Humor and Irony Membership Conference will be held 28 March-1 April 1984 in Phoenix, Arizona. The conference's topic is Contemporary Humor in categories such as Ethnic Humor, Humor in British Literature, Humor in Popular Culture, Religious Humor, and Scientific Humor. The deadline for proposals is 1 January 1984 and must include a $20 fee and one-page abstract.
