Augustine applies rhetorical principles of On Christian Doctrine to Book Eight of the Confessions by synthesizing four conversion stories as reenactments of the gospel paradigm. This pattern invites readers to repeat that reenactment. Thus Augustine's rhetorical design rather than a self-analysis or compulsion to confess informs the Confessions as autobiography.
