Here Comes "Kalakana": King Kalakaua's Visit to Portugal as Seen by the Portuguese Press

This article shows how the Portuguese press used King 'Kalakana's' (as his name was commonly spelled then) stay in Lisbon in 1881 to launch a humorous but scathing attack on national mores by means of unfavorably comparing their backwardness with the supposedly 'savage' nature of the visiting monarch.
