Abstract

"The Mnemonics of Autobiography" shows how, in My Life, Lyn Hejinian challenges chronological assumptions of conventional autobiography, employing mnemonic techniques to emphasize the synchronous nature of memory and the writerly quality of any Life. Hejinian implies that women's life-writing must scrutinize and subvert paternalistic discourse; it must include and celebrate the repetitions and the density of lived experience.
