Abstract
The paper examines how utilitarian and ideological considerations influenced biographical and other critical studies of Martin R. Delany, 1812-1885, resulting in the portrayal of a personality fundamentally different from the historical Delany. It underscores the pragmatic and complex character of Delany, and strongly urges a re-examination.
