Ethics and the Environment, 5(1 ):1 Copyright © 2000 Elsevier Science Inc. ISSN: 1085-6633 All rights of reproduction in any form reserved. Clark Wolf Introduction Several issues ago, Ethics and the Environment issued an invitation for authors to submit papers on development ethics, that linked issues of economic and human development in the so-called "third world" with other matters of concern to environmental ethics. The response was more than encouraging: we received from around the world excellent papers treating a remarkable variety of subjects. As editor for this special issue, I was, on several occasions, forced to expand my own understanding of the growing field of development ethics. I regret that we were unable to publish more of the papers we received. The following papers treat a wide range of issues, from sustainable development, human population growth, the rights and interests of indigenous peoples, the "precautionary principle," and international policies aimed at the reduction of pollution. I hope that this special issue may help to bring the practical, scientific , and political issues of development closer to the center of discussion among environmental ethicists.
