THE EDITOR'S FENCE '· The Tenth ELT Conference: Conference 18 will meet during the MLA meetings in New York. The time, place, and program are given on p. 182. Four Hardy scholars provide brief speculative statements on various aspects of Hardy's work on following pages, We look forward to a lively meeting—appli cations for admission have already reached the maximum permitted by MLA. It is, of course, always possible that someone may not be able to come and that a few seats may be available. 2. The Hardy Bibliographical Project: Abstracting of the three to five thousand items in a bibliography of writings about Thomac Hardy is now in progress. Originally compiled by H. E, and H. S. Gerber, the project has now enlisted some six or more cooperating scholars. Because of the large number of items to be read, many more abstractors are needed» We hope to complete most of the reading and abstracting within one year, 3. John Buchan Project: An annotated bibliography of writings about John Buchan, compiled and în the main abstracted by J. Randolph Cox, is now being prepared for publication by E. S. Lauterbach, This project will appear in Vol. 9, No. 5 (1966), although it will probably not be mailed until early 1967. ^. Kraus Reprints ELT: Kraus Reprint Corporation has reprinted the first four volumes of what was then ENGLiSH FICTION IN TRANSITION. The same firm is now reprinting Volumes 5-7. We still have a small stock of Volume 5 and a few numbers of Volumes 6-7, some with and some without covers; some with 65-pound cover stock, some with mimeographed covers. ANNOUNCEMENTS 1· At Purdue: We were pleased to have Richard Ellmann as a guest lecturer sponsored by the English Department. He addressed a sizeable audience of faculty and graduate students on Yeats and Auden. We also were visited by Siri Chettejee, Lecturer in English, Jadavpur University, Calcutta, who is visiting many American universities before giving a series of lectures in Jugoslavia. This year May Swenson is artist in residence and teaching a course in poetry'writing. And, however inappropriate in this context, it is impossible to avoid mentioning Purdue's forthcoming trek to the Rose Bowl. Most of us, however, will heroically brave the East Coast smog. 2. American Literary Realism, 1870-1910: The University of Texas at Arlington is in progress of initiating a new journal in American literature, roughly the counterpart of ELT. In these early stages of the planning of ALR, Professor Clayton L. Eichel berger is in charge. We look forward to the further development of what seems to us like a much needed and potentially important publication. 3. Comparative Drama: This new quarterly will make its first appearance in March I967, with editorial offices in the Department of English, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich. (^9001). ...
