EDITOR'S FENCE 1. Tenth Annual ELT Conference: New York, 1966: Pending MLA authorization, the ELT Conference being planned for the New York meetings of MLA will be on Thomas Hardy's poetry. The issue of ELT scheduled for publication in about November will be devoted to papers on Hardy's poetry. Those considering submitting papers should plan to mail them to our editorial office well before October so that there will be ample time for our readers to evaluate them and for us to prepare the accepted papers for publication. 2. New Rates—Photo-offset: 1967: We call our subscribers' attention to the announcement on p. i. We can now accept renewals for Volume 10 (1967) at the new rates. V/e shall be pleased to have such renewals as soon before December as possible so that we can make a reasonable estimate of our print order. We would like to avoid the problem we have been encountering recently of going out of print within a few months after a particular number has been mailed. To assure himself of an uninterrupted subscription, it will be well for the subscriber to renew for Volume 10 (1967) as soon as possible. 3. Thanks: We are grateful to our many readers who have for some nine years made it possible for ELT to remain very nearly self-supporting. We now have approximately 600 subscribers. We hope most of our old friends will continue to subscribe. We shall continue to publish articles of all kinds on major figures, we shall continue to give attention to minor writers, we shall continue to publish bibliographies of abstracts in depth. How much we can do and how well we do it will continue to depend in large measure on the interest of our subscribers and on their willingness to collaborate in the various projects on which we are engaged. ANNOUHCEHEXTS 1. H. E. Gerber will be at Arlington State College, Arlington, Texas for eight weeks this summer as Visiting Professor and consultant on curriculum matters. ASC has recently become part of the University of Texas system and is preparing to develop a graduate program. During the editor's absence, V.'. Eugene Davis will manage the affairs of the ELT office. 2. The Conference in the Study of Twentieth-Century Literature, Sixth Session, will meet April 29-30, 1966, at Michigan State University. The general topic is "Problems of Interpretation: Psychology, Aesthetics, Meaning." Papers by Alan A. Stone and Sue Smart Stone ("Fiction as a Source of Biographical Data"), Stephen A. Shapiro ("Psychoanalytic Perspectives on the Modern Novel"), Carl R. Hausman ("Moving from Aesthetic Meaning to Interpretative Statement"), and E. D. Hirsch ("Relationships in a General Theory of Interpretation") will be mailed to registrants beforehand; they will be discussed, but not read, at the meeting. 3. Elizabeth Steele, who is completing a Ph. D. Thesis on Hugh Walpole under the direction of Richard Carpenter at Bowling Green State University and an annotated bibliography of writings about Walpole for us, will be in England during April and May, 1966. She will be in London during much of May and will be delighted to have other Americans-in-Europe call at Lonsdale Hotel, 23-24 Montague St., London, just across the street from the British Museum. Wallace Martin (Toledo University) is still in London, hopefully working on Orage with possible publication in ELT in view. ...
