Detroit: Gale Research, 1999. xi + 380 pp. $151.00 DLB has brought us three new volumes of interest to the ELT period. Student, teacher, and scholar alike will be happy to see these volumes shelved alongside the well-nigh 200 others that have provided background and context on countless writers for over twenty years. Although it covers figures who started to write at the end of World War I or the advent of World War II, editor George Johnson's British Novelists Between the Wars provides a companion to LateVictorian and Edwardian British Novelists, First Series (1995) and Second Series (discussed below). This volume attempts to expand the traditional canon set forth in earlier volumes on British novelists of this same time (DLB 15,34, or 36) and does its part to recover the overlooked authors who were grappling with war as a theme and a reality: "the lost generation" upon many estimations . In his introduction, Johnson describes the collection: "Not surprisingly, war is the dominant theme that runs through this volume. The war is present in the feelings of absence and loss that characterize many works discussed here that would not usually be considered war novels." Entries include Daphne du Maurier, Robert Graves, Edwin Muir, Siegfried Sassoon, and Alec Waugh, just to name a few of the forty-eight inclusions. Late-Victorian and Edwardian British Novelists, Second Series responds to recent desires to re-evaluate the canon—this time by fostering interest in novelists writing from the 1880s until the end of World War I. While DLB 153 covered this same ground in some ways, this volume, also edited by Johnson, takes a realist as opposed to a romantic bent. ELT readers will find the introduction outlining major historical, political, and aesthetic issues of the day a useful encapsulation of main themes: from the Wilde trial to world wars, from the new psychology to the New Woman, from aestheticism to realism. Of the thirty-seven entries, women's rights writers—Mona Caird, Victoria Cross (Annie Sophie Cory), Sarah Grand, and George Paston (Emily Morse Symonds )—find a place among social change advocates—Thomas Burke, Marga249 ELT 43 : 2 2000 ret Harkness (John Law), Arthur Morrison, and Robert Tressell—who are right at home alongside novelists reflecting on the war: Mary Agnes Hamilton, Clémence Dane (Winifred Ashton), and Douglas Goldring. Victorian Women Poets represents the first of two volumes on British women poets writing between 1832 and 1920. With only four updates or overlapping figures (Emily Brontë, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Dora Greenwell, and Adelaide Anne Proctor), Thesing's volume augments Victorian Poets Before 1850 (DLB 32) and Victorian Poets after 1850 (DLB 35). Informed by recent feminist criticism, the present volume sets Elizabeth Barret Browning's death of 1861 as its watermark: all forty of the writers included were born before this date and were influenced by her work. Here we find sentimental poet Eliza Cook, alongside PRB coterie member Lizzie Siddal; religious writer Sarah Flower Adams's neighboring atheist scientific poet Louisa Sarah Bevington ; all interspersed among those not strangers to canonical conversations such as the Brontë sisters, Barrett Browning, and Sara Coleridge. We await the follow-up volume which uses Christina Rossetti's work as its touchstone. The tradition of excellence is well established in Gale Research Press's series.
