BOOK REVIEWS image of Davidson as only a minor poet—that and nothing more. Earl Lavender and some of the plays indicate Davidson's comic bent, too, just as they remind us that, like many others from the "nineties," he was an experimenter in several genres, and that he helped by means of his techniques to aid in the larger generic collapses that point the way toward modernism. Sloan's inclusion of a good selection of the theoretical prose adds usefulness to his anthology. The dust jacket may mislead some into anticipations of substantial annotations, which do not follow. Greater annotation, however, might illuminate such poems as "A Runnable Stag," which has been designated a difficult work by many readers. Textual notes are also minimal. The introduction offers a good primer to Davidson's life and work, however. Alas, the high price will keep it from inspiring many readers other than those who frequent academic libraries. Too bad, because the eminently readable biography whets our appetites for further reading in primary and, perhaps, secondary materials. A caveat about the latter, though: Sloan or his Oxford editors should have caught in proofreading Housman for Houseman (94,297), Aline for Alice Harland (101,107,297) and the even more egregious mistake (127, 300) of Henry Higginson's wife as the widow of Herman Melville, when she was Mrs. Whyte Melville.
