Abstract

This note argues that August Strindberg's Le Plaidoyer d'un fou (A Madman's Defense) alludes at its core to Catullus 85, Odi et amo. Strindberg's novel tells the tale of a man who hated the woman he loved and loved the woman he hated. In exploiting Catullus's epigram, Strindberg illustrates well the power and universality of Catullus's verse.
