A Selected Henry James Artsography by Anthony J. Mazzella, The William Patterson College of New Jersey The following "artsography" — if I may coin a term—is a selection of works adapted from or inspired by Henry James and his literary production in Dance, Film, Opera, Radio, Television, and Spoken-Word Recording. After a brief section with the heading BIOGRAPHY comes an alphabetical listing of James's works. Adaptations, grouped in the above categories, are arranged according to the artist's last name, followed by the title If It differs from the literary one, and then the year of performance of the work (world, U.S. or N.Y. premiere), publication, completion, or broadcast. More precisely, the adaptation categories break down as fol lows: DANCE: Choreographer's last name, first name: title if different from literary work, date of performance; followed by "m" (for "music by"): then the composer's name, if known. FILM: Director's last name, first name (or that of the producer, followed by the Identification "p" in parentheses, or, In rare instances, adapter or author, followed by "a"): title if different from literary work, generally accepted year of release; followed by "a" (for "adapter" or "author of script"), then adapter's name, If known; followed by "c" (for "cast"), then the names of the principal characters, followed by the names of the actors. Occasionally, the names of James's characters have been changed in performing arts productions (e.g., see the variations on Merton Densher under The Wings of the Dove). OPERA: Composer's last name, first name; title if different from literary work; date of performance, publication, or composition; followed by "I" (for "librettist") and the name. RADIO: Same as In FILM, with the addition of the network, the number of episodes (if applicable) in parentheses, and specific date of broadcast, either of complete show or of first episode. TELEVISION: Same as In RADIO. SPOKEN-WORD RECORDING: Record label and number (first indicates record; second, cassette), followed by director and adapter. If known; then cast; and, finally, other helpful information in parentheses. Following any of the above category listings may be additional pertinent information within parentheses, particularly comments by the artist (or other interested party) about how the adaptation came into being, or dealing with other matters that may be of interest regarding the adaptation process.
