Editor of Monographs

The Council of the Bibliographical Society seeks a new Hon. Editor of Monographs for the Society's publications when Mirjam Foot retires from this position. The new editor will need some previous experience in editing. A knowledge of foreign languages and experience in working with printers and designers would be an advantage. Occasionally the Society co-publishes with the British Library. Support from a professional typesetter/ designer is available. The Hon. Editor will be a member of the Society's Council. Temporary Closure of the Parker Library

During the construction of a new reading room and secure vault, the Parker Library will be closed from early June 2009 until Easter 2010. The manuscripts, which by then will all have been digitized, will by stored offsite. Online access to the digital images will be available from October 2009 via Parker on the Web (http://parkerweb.stanford.edu)

Library staff hope to maintain a photographic and general enquiries service throughout the closure. Limited access may be available to selected manuscripts during this period, and researchers should contact the library, giving as much advance notice as possible. Bibliographical Society Grants

The Society is pleased to announce that, as a result of the sixteenth competition for the research grants set up with funds received towards its centenary appeal, the following awards have been made:

• £2,000, matching an award of $3,000 by the Bibliographical Society of America, to Dr John Craig: The Politics of Reading in the English Parish, 1536–1642. (The Katharine F. Pantzer Jr Research Fellowship)

• £938 to Dr Cristina Dondi: Books of Hours printed in fifteenth-century Italy. (The Katharine F. Pantzer Jr Research Scholarship)

• £2,000 to Prof. Elisabeth Fraser: French illustrated travel books, 1780–1850. (The Fredson Bowers Award)

• £500 to Dr Tom Lockwood: Manuscript verse and the impeachment of Francis Bacon. (The Falconer Madan Prize)

• £1,250 to Dr William Kelly: Low Countries imprints (pre-1801) in northern English libraries. (The Barry Bloomfield Award)

• £2,000 to Dr David Stoker: John Marshall & Co. publishers, of Aldermary Court, London (Antiquarian Booksellers' Award)

• £1,420 to Dr Andrew Cambers: The library of John Rastrick (1650–1725).

• £1,993 to Dr Michael Johnston: Gentry compilations of Middle English romance.

• £360 to Mr Daniel Smith: Book collecting habits of Edward, second Viscount Conway.

• £2,000 to Ms Patricia Stewart: The development of the medieval Latin prose bestiary.

Applications for major grants to be awarded in February 2010 should be submitted by 1 December 2009 and should be supported by letters from two referees familiar with the applicant's work. A limited sum is also available for minor grants of £50 to £200, awarded on a year-round basis. Minor grants

The Fellowships and Bursaries sub-committee of the Bibliographical Society offers small grants of £50 to £200 throughout the year for specific purposes such as travel expenses or the cost of microfilming. Applications for such grants may be submitted on the appropriate form at any time, and should be supported by one referee and a statement that funds are not available from other sources. If the applicant is registered for a research degree, the application should be accompanied by a letter of support from his or her academic supervisor.
