Abstract

E. D. Hirsch Jr. is professor emeritus of education and humanities at the University of Virginia. In addition to Cultural Literacy (1987), he is author of numerous influential books, including Validity in Interpretation (1967), The Philosophy of Composition (1977), and, most recently, The Knowledge Deficit (2006). He is the founder and chairman of the nonprofit Core Knowledge Foundation. He has also served as a distinguished fellow at the Hoover Institution and is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
