Charles Bernstein’s most recent books are With Strings and My Way: Speeches and Poems, both from the University of Chicago Press, and Republics of Reality: 1975–1995, from Sun & Moon Press. Jane Bowers, author of two books and many articles on Gertrude Stein, is currently working on a book about American performance poetry to be published by Beacon Press. She is a professor of English and Theater at Hunter College and the Graduate School of the City University of New York, and associate director of the CUNY Honors College.

Al Carmines founded the Judson Dance Theatre and the Judson Poets Theatre. Along with Lawrence Kornfield, he directed and provided music for seven works by Gertrude Stein. He acted the part of Gertrude Stein in his opera, The Making of Americans, which was nominated for a Pulitzer prize.

Richard Foreman has written and directed fifty plays for his Ontological-Hysteric theater and designed and directed many operas and plays for major theaters around the world. He is the recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship, nine Obies, and the PEN/Laura Pels Master American Dramatist award. Six collections of his plays have been published.

Maria Irene Fornes has written and directed more than three dozen plays, including The Successful Life of 3, Fefu and Her Friends, and The Conduct of Life. The recipient of eight Obie Awards and an NEA Distinguished Artists Award, she was Signature Theatre Company’s Playwright in Residence for the 1999–2000 season.

Shawn-Marie Garrett teaches in the theater department at Barnard College, Columbia University. “Return of the Repressed” is a chapter in progress from a book she is writing about the theater of Suzan-Lori Parks.

Richard Howard, a poet and translator, teaches literature in the School of the Arts (writing division) at Columbia University.

Carrie Hughes is managing editor of Theater and a student in the dramaturgy and dramatic criticism program at the Yale School of Drama.

James Leverett is chair of the Department of Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism at the Yale School of Drama.

Anne-Marie Levine is a concert pianist, poet, and scholar, and the author of a prize-winning book of poems, Euphorbia. A board member at Poets House, Levine is a founding member of the International Trauma Center and has spoken and published widely on the subject of art and trauma.

Claudia Orenstein is an assistant professor of theater at Hunter College, CUNY. She is the author of Festive Revolutions: The Politics of Popular Theatre and the San Francisco Mime Troupe.

Bevya Rosten, theater director and writer, recently adapted and directed two Gertrude Stein works. She teaches at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and is currently a visiting faculty member at the Yale School of Drama. Her forthcoming book, The Fractured Stage, is about Stein’s influence on American avant-garde performance.

Rebecca Ann Rugg is the dramaturg at the Joseph Papp Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival. She is a recent graduate of the Yale School of Drama’s dramaturgy and dramatic criticism program and is writing a dissertation on showstoppers in the American musical.

Christiane Salomon is a student in the DFA program at the Yale School of Drama.

Jonathan Shandell holds an MFA in dramaturgy and dramatic criticism from the Yale School of Drama. He has served as resident dramaturg for Soho Rep’s “Summer Camp” Festival of New Works for the Theater and for their Writer/Director Development Series. He is the former executive editor of Theater.

Catherine Sheehy is the resident dramaturg of the Yale Repertory Theatre and an associate professor of dramaturgy and dramatic criticism at the Yale School of Drama. She has been an associate editor of American Theatre and managing editor of Theater.
