Establish a study of different movements and promote fusion, not contrast The mixture of a [beast?] body of female [illegible] in Princess Kaguya2 is clear on this point This needs to be developed further.

sunstroke — a melting person a person of the Flamand3

Extension and ways of melting get sooty — Moreau4 — slender branches how Bacon's5 face melts mud

  • a person composed of particles and tactile sensation

  • his skull is packed with branches

  • small branches in his head snap

  • a bird flies from his temple

  • an extending neck

  • a slug crawling along his backbone

  • a flying grasshopper

  • a stick

  • a sunflower

  • a forehead

  • a puddle on the sole of the foot

  • insects in space

  • people melted in furnaces in Auschwitz

  • grass turning pale

Frequent memos urge making it short They are probably urgings not about time but the density of material

When, no matter what, the development of movements falls into a pattern, [how one cap-tures?] nerves becomes so, there is a danger of their being tied together only by contrast with differing vocabularies

So I convey these exercises only as a condition for forming a mere body.

Translators' Notes

1. Jean Fautrier (1898-1964) was a French painter, illustrator, and printmaker. Hijikata made a number of scrapbooks filling them with words and images for the creation of his own works. He pasted this painting into Scrapbook for Butoh (circa 1970) and titled the page "Zaishitsu hen II Fōtorie." We have been unable to identify the painting.

2. Princess Kaguya (Kaguya hime) is a legendary beauty from another world.

3. Flamand seems to refer to a series of lithographs, Intereiur Flamand (Flemish Interior) by French printmaker and draftsman, Rodolphe Bresdin (1822-1885).

4. Gustave Moreau (1826-1898), the French painter.

5. Francis Bacon (1909-1992), the English painter. [End Page 61]
