Gender Melancholy in Doubrovsky’s autofictions

Through the theme of gender melancholy, this article explores the gender regime in Serge Doubrovsky’s life and works. A structure of binary oppositions emerges, reflected in the very different relations he entertains with men and women. In writing, the writer feels he can express his bisexuality, aided by the androgynous genre of autofiction. Since gender melancholy involves the act of mourning, the article concludes that mourning and death are omnipresent Doubrovskian themes.
