(right) Paul Adderley and Michael Young, examination of cultural soils using a polarizing microscope with four different optical methods used to produce coincident images: (a) oblique incident illumination, (b) plane-polarized illumination, (c) circularly polarized illumination, and (d) with the sample between crossed polarizers. (Photos © Paul Adderley) These images are used both as a visual element in the Ground-breaking installation and, after image analysis, as a source for sound synthesis.
