Abstract

Translation has had a long and troubled history in Hawai'i, leading many Hawaiian-language speakers to oppose further translation of historic Hawaiian texts. However, a new project, Awaiäulu, aims to take these oppositions into account and translate historical Hawaiian texts in a more "ethical" and "responsible" way.
