Preface to the Special Issue on Musical Performance in Africa

This issue focuses on the performance of music in Africa, and emphasizes the increased attention to the arts and humanities in Africa Today. Whether music is performed in a face-to-face situation or provided as an underscore to film, it is a medium with great impact in the lives of people on the continent of Africa and throughout the world who experience it.

Featured in this issue are a group of papers that discuss some of the changing realities of musical performance on the continent followed by a paper that addresses issues of film music in the Tarzan films that have been created by Hollywood for more than fifty years. All of the essays emphasize what a critical medium music becomes for human expression and how essential it is that we examine it in our effort to understand societies in Africa.
