Abstract
Designing an academic library is a form of scholarship because the building embodies certain basic principles of modern librarianship. New libraries then serve as "teaching and learning instruments" that encourage students to develop the electronic research skills demanded by an information society. Design considerations determine how well a library will be able to fulfill this mission.
