In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:

  • Editor’s Introduction
  • Kim Porter

Welcome to The Oral History Review 36.1. You should notice a few differences in this edition of the journal. First and foremost, in response to multiple comments, perhaps complaints, the font used in this edition is larger and somewhat different than that used in the previous two issues produced by Oxford University Press. Let us know if this is a better fit for your eyes. This is, after all, your journal—the journal of the Oral History Association.

A second difference that I hope you will appreciate is the addition of more photographs. So many times in previous editions, it seems as if we have been rather negligent in providing visual clues to the work presented by our authors. In this issue, Loh Kah Seng provided numerous photographs for us to select from which help to illustrate the changing conditions of Singapore in the aftermath of a devastating fire. Similarly, Kathleen Ryan provides the opportunity to match faces with stories in her exploration of women service members in World War I.

Finally, I want to offer my gratitude to those who often go unsung in the process of producing a journal: the anonymous reviewers. These are the folks to read the rawest of material, see the promise of an article, and make the suggestions that either turn the promise into reality, or aid in the decision to reject an article as lacking the qualities necessary to become part of the journal. Accordingly, for the last two years’ work, I thank Anne Aby, Jessica P. Albert, Willoughby Anderson, Yolanda Arauza, Curtis Austin, Teresa Barnett, Adam Barnhart, Lucinda McCray Beier, Lisa Krissoff Boehm, Shelley Bookspan, Kaye Briegel, Beverly Bunch-Lyons, David Carey, Jr., Thomas Charlton, Jeffrey G.
