149 The Institute on Health Care for the Poor and Underserved announces The Sixth National Conference on HEALTH CARE FOR THE POOR AND UNDERSERVED MANAGED CARE: ENSURING EQUITY FOR THE POOR AND UNDERSERVED October 4-5,1993 Meharry Medical College Nashville, Tennessee Health maintenance organizations and preferred provider organizations have proliferated during the past decade. To a great extent, their growth has been based on the perceived promise of these organizations to reduce health care costs without compromising quality of care, and to introduce a level of competition into the health care market that would result in a more efficient and effective health care system. As the nation pursues universal access as a step toward national health insurance, discussion and debate on managed care continue to mount. The Institute on Health Care for the Poor and Underserved seeks to provide a forum for scholars, providers, quality assurance and utilization review managers, policymakers, and community leaders to explore the implications of managed care for the urban and rural underserved. This conference will explain the operational elements that are unique to the delivery of a managed care system to the underserved. Topics will include how managed care works; how it will affect Medicaid and Medicare; how current programs can be altered and evaluated; implications for underrepresented providers; effects of managed care on medical training programs; and the role of quality management.
