Greece is one of many countries where the government restricts the operation of community-run and private schools. In times of stagnating social expenditures and excess demand for higher education, however, the search for alternative financing methods is imperative. In this paper, the history of private education in Greece is briefly outlined. Also, a brief analysis of the nascent, unrecognized, fee-collecting institutions that have been attracting increasing numbers is attempted.
