In our introductory essay for "From the Periodical Archives: Anne S. Stephens's 'The Jockey-Cap'—The First Version of 'Malaeska,'" in 18.1 (2008), 101–128), we erroneously claimed that "no scholar has recognized" Stephens's story in the Portland Magazine as the earliest version of her tale Malaeska. In fact, Colin T. Ramsey first briefly noted "Jockey-Cap" as the earliest version of Malaeska in his chapter (with Kathryn Zabelle Derounian-Stodola) on "Dime Novels" in A Companion to American Fiction, 1780–1865, ed. Shirley Samuels (Malden, MA: Blackwell, 2004), and subsequently expanded on this identification in "Ann Stephens's Malaeska: An Unknown Early Version and Some Thoughts on Dime Novels and the Gender of Readers," Dime Novel Roundup 75.3 (June 2006): 67–76. We apologize for this oversight. [End Page 4]
