In Memoriam: R. Don Higginbotham

R. Don Higginbotham was Dowd Distinguished Professor of History at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the author or editor of ten books and numerous articles, and a renowned authority on George Washington and the military history of the American Revolution. He served as president of SHEAR in 1992–93 and was an active and devoted member of the organization for many years. Higginbotham died in Chapel Hill on June 22, 2008, at the age of 77, after a long struggle against cancer.

A native of Missouri, Don Higginbotham received his BA and MA degrees from Washington University and his PhD from Duke. In addition to his 41 years at Chapel Hill, he taught at the College of William and Mary, Longwood College, Louisiana State University, and the United States Military Academy. Besides his leadership of SHEAR, he served as chair of the UNC–CH History Department and president of the Southern Historical Association. Higginbotham will long be remembered for his intellectual energy, his generous spirit, his creative engagement in comparative history, and his perceptive attention to the interaction of civil and military influences on the history of the early republic. We at SHEAR are grateful for his inspiration and encouragement, and honor his memory.

Friends of SHEAR

I am delighted again to be able to acknowledge an impressive list of Friends of SHEAR—the stalwarts of the organization who dug a wee bit deeper to give us some additional financial support. The inspiration and hard work of the presidential triumvirate of Mary Kelley, John Brooke, and Paul Gilje have secured for us our largest ever cohort of Friends. I’d like now to express, on behalf of your journal and your society, our [End Page 653] heartfelt thanks. To paraphrase the inimitable editors of yore, John Larson and Michael Morrison, our Friends are characterized not only by their obvious generosity, but also to a person by their longstanding devotion to, and support of, SHEAR. Separately, and taken with one another, they embody the collegiality, professionalism, and vitality that are the essence of SHEAR. In more ways than we can count, SHEAR is in their debt. Take a bow, please:
