From my time as a Lesbian Caucus Chair (1990-1993), I have worked to keep the caucus seat on the governing board through NWSA's evolving structural changes that date from the Akron conference in 1990. Many of those structural changes affected the caucuses; caucus representation has shifted from all caucuses having a voting seat on the board, through a proposal for no seats on the board, through a 1993 compromise that three chairs out of nine would have seats on a rotating basis, to, once again, the Lesbian Caucus having a permanent seat on the board. The Governing Council will continue to struggle with conflicts between identity groups, but for now, it has reaffirmed its commitment to the Lesbian Caucus and Women of Color Caucus chairs with permanent seats on the board.
