- Pure Lizard
She ispart lizard, part woman,and one of her ancestorsmust have been a monkey.
Her skin is pure lizard.Perhaps she's also part chameleon.Her eyes are tiny. Her face is narrow, angular.
I am four in this memory,four when I see her standing on a wall—There's a crowd listening to her.She can even speak Marathi.She's just as tall as I am—but so old, and her skin hangseverywhere from the bones in her body.
I think she is a hairless monkey—and I want to go closer to listen, to speak to her.
I want her to tell me everything about monkeyhood.I want to see if she actually has a tail.I want to play hide-and-seek with her.
Now, what is she telling the people?She is shrill, crying out to them. [End Page 86]
There is so much urgencyrippling across her skin—such desperation in her voice.And yet, some people are laughing.I want to know why—but I am pulled away,told that it's time to go home.
I thought of her again today, still certain of my memory.
Could she have been the Sibyl? Then, I wonder,why did she leave her cave?And where is she now? [End Page 88]
- Puro lagarto
Ella esen parte lagarto, en parte mujer,y uno de sus antepasadosha de haber sido un mono.
Su piel es de puro lagarto.Quizá ella es en parte camaleón.Sus ojos son pequeñísimos. Su rostro es estrecho, angular.
Soy cuatro cosas en este recuerdo,cuatro cosas cuando la veo parada sobre una pared –Hay un gentío escuchándola.Ella hasta puede hablar en marathi.Ella es apenas tan alta como yo –pero tan vieja, y su piel cuelgade los huesos de su cuerpo por todos lados.
Creo que es un mono sin pelo –y quiero acercarme para escuchar, para hablar con ella.
Quiero que ella me cuente todo sobre lo que es ser mono.Quiero ver si ella en realidad tiene cola.Quiero jugar a las escondidas con ella.
¿Qué le está diciendo a la gente?Ella es estridente, les grita. [End Page 87]
Se nota una oleada de urgenciaen su piel –hay desesperación en su voz.Y aún así, algunas personas se ríen.Quiero saber porqué –pero alguien me tira,y me dice que es hora de irse a casa.
Hoy pensé en ella otra vez, aún permanece en mi memoria.
