Celebrities join the roster in ALA's "Read" poster series

Kirk Cameron, Bo Jackson and Glenn Close are the latest celebrities to appear on the acclaimed "Read" poster series developed by the American Library Association (ALA) Graphics Department.

Each 22" x 34" full-color poster depicts a star reading a favorite book. Kirk Cameron of television's "Growing Pains" enjoys C. S. Lewis's "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"; Glenn Close of "Fatal Attraction" and "Dangerous Liaisons" embraces "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen; "The Old Man and the Sea" by Ernest Hemingway engages baseball and football star Bo Jackson's attention.

Other posters in the series feature Bill Cosby, Bette Midler, Paul Newman, Mikhail Baryshnikov, William Hurt, Oprah Winfrey, Michael J. Fox, David Bowie and Isaiah Thomas.

The three new posters may be ordered individually ($5 each) or in a kit (3 for $12). A kit with all 21 celebrity posters is $75 (a $105 value).

Ezra Jack Keats/Kerlan Collection Fellow 1990 Named

Leslie Tryon was selected as the Ezra Jack Keats/Kerlan Collection Fellow 1990. The Fellowship is awarded to "a talented writer and/or illustrator of children's books who wishes to use the Kerlan Collection for the furtherance of his or her artistic development." She plans to visit the Kerlan Collection in the fall.

Leslie Tryon's illustrations have appeared in posters and science books by Evan-Moor and in the book review section of the Los Angeles Times. She is the author/illustrator of Albert's Alphabet (Atheneum/Macmillan, 1991).

Call for Papers

10th Congress of the International Research Society, September 16-19, 1991 in Paris, France

THEME: The applications of Contemporary Literary and Cultural Theory to Children's Literature

Forums will be organized around the following subthemes:

  1. 1. Reader: theories of the reading process, psychological criticism, phenomenology, etc . . .

  2. 2. Culture: aesthetics, translation, feminism, political, sociological, national stereotypes, etc . . .

  3. 3. Text: intertextuality, semiotics, structuralism, etc . . .

Papers will be presented in French or in English and should not have been presented, or published, elsewhere. If accepted, papers must be read at the Congress by their authors.

The Board has the responsibility for accepting or rejecting a paper.

It is not necessary to be a member of IRSCL to submit a paper. Papers should be 4-5 pages single spaced (20 min. reading time), accompanied by an abstract in English of 200 words (15 lines).

ALA releases "Choosing the Best in Children's Video"

The American Library Association (ALA) announces the release of "Choosing the Best in Children's Video," a guide for parents and caregivers to identifying and locating quality videos for children through age 12.

The 35-minute program, hosted by actor Christopher Reeve, includes interviews with children's video experts and clips from more than 30 exemplary programs, including adaptations of children's books, how-tos, original dramas, theatrical features and musical performances.

Experts appearing in the video include: Peggy Charren, president, Action for Children's Television; Robert Johnson, M.D., director of adolescent medicine, New Jersey Medical School; Academy Award-winning children's video producer Barbara Bryant; animator and producer Michael Sporn; Susan Pine, children's services, New York Public Library; Steve DelVecchio, children's librarian, New York Public Library; and Lorelle Henry, assistant director, School Library Services, New York City.

The video emphasizes the library as the best source for quality video and librarians as experts willing to help parents with selection.
