With this issue, we say a grateful goodbye to Joe Thomas, ESQ’s book-review editor since 1997. During Professor Thomas’s tenure with us, the journal’s pages have featured substantial review-essays on a range of fertile strains in recent scholarship—focusing, for example, on late 1990s Internet resources for the study of nineteenth-century American literature, on newly complicating approaches to the sentimental tradition, on the “latest scholarly uses” of periodicals, and on explorations of Native American literature “in the Age of Pocahontas.” These critical overviews and analyses, while not at all easy to solicit or develop, come as a valued gift to scholars, colleagues tell us, and we thank Professor Thomas for his generous decade-long contribution to the field.
